Prediabetes is defined by having higher than normal blood sugar levels. This puts you at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Usually, prediabetes is asymptomatic.
Type 2 diabetes is high blood sugar levels due to your body not making enough of a hormone called insulin, or the insulin it makes not working properly — known as insulin resistance.
You can get a HbA1c blood test from your doctor, which tells you about your average blood sugar over the last 2-3 months. Readings of 42mmol/mol (6%) – 47mmol/mol (6.4%) indicate prediabetes. Readings over 48mmol/mol (6.5%) indicate type 2 diabetes.
HbA1c is your average blood glucose (sugar) levels for the last two to three months. HbA1c is what’s known as glycated haemoglobin. This is something that’s made when the glucose (sugar) in your body sticks to your red blood cells. Your body can’t use the sugar properly, so more of it sticks to your blood cells and builds up in your blood. Red blood cells are active for around 2-3 months, which is why the reading is taken quarterly.
In simple terms, by increasing movement, reducing carbohydrate consumption, and improving body composition (increased muscle mass, and reduced body fat). By doing all of this it will help your body regain sensitivity to insulin, which in turn will regulate your blood sugar better.

Prediabetes can be reversed. The current consensus for type 2 diabetes is that it can be put into long-term remission, however, there are suggestions that a combination of diet & exercise can reverse diabetes up to a HbA1c of 70mmol/mol.
